England women's manager Sarina Wiegman signs two-year contract extension
The full report
England women's manager Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension with the Lionesses, according to the BBC Sport. The 56-year-old's previous deal was due to expire after next summer's World Cup, but her new contract will run until the end of Euro 2029.
Wiegman has been in charge of England for more than five years and has guided the Lionesses to their second straight European Championship title with victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final. The victory meant the Lionesses became the first England team - women's or men's - to win a major trophy on foreign soil.
The BBC Sport reports that Wiegman's new contract will give her the chance to lead the Lionesses to three European championship titles in a row. Wiegman, who took on the role in September 2021, also led her native Netherlands to Euros glory in 2017 and has reached the final of the past five major tournaments.
The Guardian reports that Wiegman says she 'cannot think of a better job in football' and is excited to continue working with the Lionesses. Wiegman's deal was due to expire after next summer's World Cup, but her new contract will give her the chance to lead the team to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles should they qualify.
England will reach the World Cup finals, which are being held in Brazil in June and July, if they come through a two-leg playoff against Ukraine for which they are heavy favourites. Wiegman's main concern right now is the World Cup and helping the squad realise their potential in the years to come.
