Russell Brand faces rape allegations in court
The full report
A woman has alleged that Russell Brand raped her at his London townhouse in 2009, a court has heard. The woman, who was a fan of Brand's comedy, said she was picked out from a crowd after one of his gigs and invited to have drinks with him backstage.
The woman alleged that she performed oral sex on Brand, but refused to have penetrative sex. She said she felt 'awful' and 'disgusting' when she left the dressing room, and that Brand asked her why she had refused to have sex with him.
Brand allegedly told the woman that 'we don't belong to anyone, we're all free, the ownership of people is sort of what we've been sold.' He then asked for her phone number and began messaging and calling her, persuading her to visit his three-storey townhouse in Hampstead, north-west London.
The woman alleged that when she arrived at Brand's home, he told her 'this is the best decision you've made.' However, when they went to Brand's bedroom, he ordered her to have a shower because her hair smelled 'funny', and made her brush her teeth. She said this made her feel 'really dirty'.
The woman said she 'tortured herself' in the years that followed because the alleged assault was one of the 'most painful experiences' of her life. Brand, 51, faces three charges of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault against six women, in allegations spanning 10 years from 1999 to 2009.
Brand has denied all the charges and has pleaded not guilty. The woman's video-recorded police interview was played to Southwark crown court on Tuesday.
