Declan Rice scores late equaliser as Arsenal and Bayern Munich draw 2-2 in Champions League
The full report
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice scored a late equaliser to earn his team a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The draw was just the second time Arsenal had dropped points in 12 games in all competitions this season.
Eberechi Eze opened the scoring for Arsenal in the first half, but Alphonso Davies levelled for Bayern after a sublime pass from Harry Kane. Kane then scored from the penalty spot to put his team in charge, extending his scoring streak to 10 straight Champions League games.
Rice's equaliser came with eight minutes remaining, and it was a lovely goal from him. Arsenal even hinted at a late winner, with Jurriën Timber drawing a tip over from Manuel Neuer in stoppage time. However, Bayern shaded an absorbing tie in terms of clear chances created.
The draw was a significant result for Arsenal, who were hunting their latest statement result. They were value for it, and they were not intimidated by Bayern's fortress-like home stadium. Bayern had not previously lost a Champions League group or league phase match at their own stadium since December 2013, 40 games ago.
Bayern had wanted revenge for their 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in the league stage last season, but they did not get it. Arsenal's never-say-die spirit was rewarded by Rice's goal, and they made their point. They were not intimidated by Bayern's strong lineup, and they bristled with assurance at the outset.
Bayern were without several key players, including Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich, and Jamal Musiala. However, Harry Kane ensured that Bayern posed a consistent threat against Arsenal's miserly defence with another excellent performance. Kane's second-half penalty, his 16th goal in 23 matches against Arsenal, extended his scoring streak to 10 straight Champions League games.
