The brief

Law enforcement officers in Cebu have obtained judicial approval to examine computers, phones, and storage media handed over by Thomas Markle Jr.

The story

Philippine police have secured a court warrant to examine electronic devices and media seized from the former residence of Thomas Markle Sr, the father of the Duchess of Sussex. Officers in Cebu previously received four boxes of material, including computers, mobile phones, hard drives, and old videotapes, which were handed over by Thomas Markle Jr.

The handover followed reports earlier this month alleging that hundreds of images of child sexual abuse were found at the property. Thomas Markle Sr, 82, has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as "sick lies." He relocated to the Philippines last year following a series of strokes and lived in Cebu until May. He is currently in the United States.

Cebu Regional Prosecutor Graeme Elmido stated to the BBC that Thomas Markle Jr was adamant the case required investigation and that his father had to answer for the accusations. Thomas Markle Jr also told the Sun that he apologised to the Duchess of Sussex for initially siding with their father during their long-running estrangement, stating he had protected the wrong person for nine years.

A closer look

Previously, the Sun on Sunday reported that the suspect's ex-wife, the late Roslyn Loveless, sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police in 2019 regarding allegations, which was shared with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the time. Loveless, who divorced Thomas Markle Sr in 1975, is the mother of his two other children.

The Duchess of Sussex has been estranged from her father since 2018. In a statement released on Friday, she confirmed the existence of the 2019 letter, stating she was deeply distressed and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She added that the situation explained her decision to cut off contact and prevent him from interacting with her children.
