The story
Former world number one Naomi Osaka stated she intends to continue striving for her Grand Slam-winning form following the conclusion of her tennis season in Japan on Thursday. The four-time Grand Slam champion was defeated in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo by 18-year-old Slovak player Mia Pohankova, who is ranked 144th globally. The match ended with scores of 6-3, 7-5 in favour of Pohankova.
Osaka, currently ranked 18th in the world, has not secured a title throughout the year. She has additionally not reached a Grand Slam final since returning to professional tennis following a 15-month hiatus after the birth of her daughter Shai in 2023. This tournament appearance marked Osaka's first time participating in the Pan Pacific Open in four years.
Reflecting on her performance, the 29-year-old athlete indicated she feels at peace with herself and confident about her overall game. While acknowledging her desire to challenge for Grand Slam titles, she noted that she has not yet reached that position but remains determined to keep trying. She assessed her current tennis standard as being quite good.
A closer look
During her appearance at the Tokyo event, Osaka drew attention with her attire, stepping onto the court in a red kimono-style gown featuring a long frilly train. She explained that the colour was selected to contrast with the blue crane-pattern outfit she wore during her opening match earlier in the week. Osaka mentioned that she had prepared additional custom outfits for the Tokyo audience, though she expressed disappointment that her early exit prevented her from wearing them.
Known for generating attention with distinct custom-made court outfits, Osaka previously referenced NBA fashion figures at the US Open and wore a jellyfish-inspired design during competition in Australia.
