The brief

State media said the demonstration featured suicide attack drones, cruise missiles and a 600 mm multiple‑rocket launcher, with officials claiming 100 % accuracy against an island target.

The story

North Korean state news agency KCNA reported that a weapons demonstration on Friday included test‑fires of attack drones, cruise missiles and a 600 mm multiple‑rocket launcher. The agency said the drones and missiles struck an island target with perfect accuracy, and that the event was intended to showcase progress in drone and artificial‑intelligence technology for military use.

The demonstration was described as featuring "suicide attack drones" and multipurpose drones capable of launching air‑to‑surface missiles. In addition, cruise missiles and a multiple‑rocket launcher were fired, according to the KCNA report. The agency quoted leader Kim Jong Un as emphasizing the need to achieve "absolute superiority" in drone technology, describing strength as essential for peace.

The tests followed a day after South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that North Korea had launched "around a dozen" short‑range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea, a launch that Seoul said violated United Nations Security Council resolutions. South Korean officials said the missiles travelled roughly 250 km and that further analysis was underway.

A closer look

South Korean authorities also highlighted a recent land‑mine incident along the heavily fortified inter‑Korean border that injured three South Korean soldiers. A joint Seoul‑UN investigation concluded that the mines had been placed by North Korea over a year earlier, a claim the North dismissed as a mockery of the accusation.

The weapons demonstration comes amid a series of recent North Korean tests, including a precision‑guided torpedo system and an intermediate‑range hypersonic missile, both reportedly incorporating artificial‑intelligence components. Regional observers note that the timing of the drills coincides with heightened diplomatic friction on the Korean Peninsula.
