The brief

A retired Texas school custodian who spent nearly four decades supporting students has been honored with a new elementary school named after her.

The story

A new elementary school in Texas is set to be named after Marilyn Hampton, a retired custodian who worked within the Aubrey Independent School District for 39 years. The tribute was announced during an October 21 governing board meeting, which was recorded on video and later shared widely online.

During her nearly four decades with the district before retiring in 2022, Hampton extended her responsibilities beyond traditional custodial duties. According to district officials, she regularly assisted students with their classwork, purchased and delivered school supplies for children in need, provided rides to students, and staffed the ticket booth at football games.

Superintendent Shannon Saylor praised Hampton's long-standing dedication during the public meeting. Saylor noted that thousands of students, teachers, and staff members drew inspiration from Hampton's commitment, stating that she served as an educator at heart despite not holding the official title.

A closer look

District officials arranged the announcement by inviting Hampton to the meeting under the pretense of discussing a school-related matter. Superintendent Saylor then asked her to unroll a red carpet displaying her name in navy blue letters. Hampton expressed deep surprise and emotion upon learning the news, covering her mouth and telling attendees that she had not expected the tribute.

Following the announcement, Hampton viewed a digital rendering of the upcoming facility, which is scheduled to open in August, and jokingly remarked that people better keep the building clean. Speaking afterward to news outlet WFAA, Hampton reflected on her career and expressed gratitude for the recognition of her decades of service to the school community.
