How do horror novelists celebrate Halloween? ‘Whimsical witch stuff’ and vintage radio shows

Horror novelists share their Halloween recommendations, from vintage radio shows to cozy witchy vibes.

The full report

Horror novelists Riley Sager, Leah Rowan, Rachel Harrison, and Grady Hendrix have shared their advice for embracing Halloween, even for those who are scaredy cats. According to Rachel Harrison, author of the witchy novel Cackle and the haunting read, Play Nice, horror is a broad spectrum that doesn't have to be terrifying. She suggests doing a corn maze, enjoying spiced cider, and watching a Shudder movie marathon for a fun and wholesome Halloween experience.

Riley Sager, author of The Unknown and Home Before Dark, recommends listening to spooky vintage radio shows, such as Three Keleton Key and Sorry Wrong Number, which he finds chilling but not terrifying. Grady Hendrix, on the other hand, likes to have a book and plow through it on Halloween night, and this year he's reading The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane.

For those who want to ease into the spooky season, Rachel Harrison suggests leaning into the whimsical witch stuff and watching films like Lisa Frankenstein, which is a good spooky season movie that's not too scary. Grady Hendrix notes that Halloween is a social time of the year, and horror fans often enjoy watching horror movies with friends.

The Guardian spoke with these horror novelists to get their recommendations for enjoying Halloween, and they shared their favorite Halloween candy and how they celebrate the season. Whether you're a fan of horror or just looking for a fun and spooky experience, there's something for everyone this Halloween season.
