A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left multiple victims, including children, according to reports from the Bend Police Department and Yahoo News. The suspected shooter is also dead, but authorities have yet to confirm who shot the suspect.
Four people, including three children, were killed in the shooting, US networks reported, citing unnamed law enforcement sources. At least two people were transported to a hospital, but there were no details on their condition.
The shooting occurred at 1 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) and officers arrived at the scene about two minutes later. The United States experiences frequent gun violence, with thousands of people killed each year, and has the highest rate of gun-related deaths among high-income countries.
The deadliest school shooting in US history took place at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, where South Korean student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded 17 others before taking his own life. There have been more than 365 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
The Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent, Steven Cook, released a statement expressing sympathy to the families and the community affected by the violence. The FBI Director, Kash Patel, is assisting in the investigation, and the school district has set up a family reunification site at a nearby church.
